Memorial Day 2011 is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars
Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end.
Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach.

Thanks for explaining your Memorial Day. The statues are excellent. I find it difficult to comprehend war; there must be a better way to solve problems. So many young lives lost or ruined.

lots to be thankful for for the soldiers who sacrificed and the families that lost them.
Many American citizens have no idea what it is like to serve their country and take for granted what our military service men and women go through to protect all Americans Freedoms. Many are complacent ignorant fools that say stupid things when they have no clue what it is like to be in the boots of the true American Hero’s that are fighting for them. True Americans will Never Forget your Incredible Valor. I say God Bless our Fallen Hero's and thank you from every fiber of my being.

Beautiful image -- the best things in life aren't free and we can never give away our Freedom and rights. Yes, it is sad that today Memorial day is usually thought of as a time for barbeques.

my great grandfather on my moms side died in the civil war -- from cholera I think. And my great grandfather on my dads side lost his arm in the civil war -- and my husbands great great grandfather was in the cavalry in the civil war. I wrote about this on my blog a few years ago. This is one thing that I've always remembered. Memorial Day is not just a Holiday to have fun in. It's a day that we should all remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice that our Country can remain free. There are so many who have done that. I lost 2 of my buddies while over in Vietnam. Their names are on the Wall in Washington.
I have visited Gettysburg on 3 different times. Always have enjoyed going there. Walking around seeing places that there was a big fight and so many, many Lives that were lost. I will probably take another trip down there this summer.
