This is the Strain Building. It is the oldest surviving building in Darien. It was built in 1813 as a commercial building on the water front. It is a very very very sturdy building. When the Union Troops burned Darien to the ground in June 1863, it was the only surviving building on its street.
It was a warehouse for cotton and other plantation goods before the Civil War, later it was a ship chandlery, a portion of the building was used as the Darien Bank from 1913-1961.
When I say it's sturdy , it survived destruction attempts on the part of its owner recently. It's not going anywhere anytime soon, but it's desperate need of renovation and re-purposing.
