Lets Talk Diet

Our good friend Grace is our hostess this week, here is what she has to say.

Many people make resolutions during the month of January and they usually include diets/eating healthy/losing weight and all that good stuff. I myself decided to try the Weight Watchers. My assignment is to tell us about a diet or two (Atkins, Sonoma, Weight Watchers, South Beach, the You on a Diet, Best Life, The Abs Diet etc) that you have tried and what you liked or did not like about it. You can tell us about one diet that you had so much success with, or another that was a torture to follow or both. For Photo assignment, post a photo of something/someone that makes you feel good about yourself.

OK, here goes, it has been many years since I have been on a "Diet". After the birth of my second daughter (1971) I was trying to lose the baby weight. I lived off of hard boiled eggs, saltine crackers and hot dogs and cabbage. Guess you could call it a high protein diet, what I was doing was counting calories, it took me a year but I got back to my pre baby weight. After a few years, of course I started getting that "Middle Age " spread, all of my body weight shifted. After years of being in a bra size 34c, my boobs went to a 38D, I hated it, but my hubby loved it (typical man). I tried the cabbage soup diet, that was like a vegetable soup with cabbage in it. You could eat all you wanted all day, but hardly anything else. It didn't take me long to get sick of it. In January of 1995, my hubby had a heart attack, we had to learn how to read labels and eat healthy and know what was in the food we put in our mouths. We retired in 1999 and joined a gym. To this day, we just try to watch what we eat, 90% of it is healthy, I am a ferocious label reader. I don't like to use the word diet, moderation is a better term. I go to the gym 3 days a week and do aerobic and weights. My hubby goes more like 6 days a week. Now I am not skinny Minny by all means, as a matter of fact, I probably should drop about 10-20 lbs. I have learned to be kind to myself and do the best I can do. I intend to keep doing what I am doing because, I feel good and I think I am pretty healthy. Here is the photo of what makes me feel good about myself.

Your approach is a sane and healthy one - and one I am trying out as well. You look wonderful in that photo!

Great photo, Jan. At our age, it's a little harder, I think, but you have the right idea, and look great.

We must be a similar age as my first baby was born in 1971. You do look lovely. Exercising is a key dimension of healthy living. You do look wonderful, and your grandaughter is mighty cute.

Cabbage soup diet, I must say you were brave. I have heard lots about it though

I mentioned the cabbage soup diet, it does get very boring. There is no magic formula, as you say moderation and exercise is the key. I just find it incredibly difficult to be that disciplined.

Your grandaughter is so cute.

You have the right idea, Janis. Self acceptance--what you are may not be perfect by the arbitrary standards but it's plenty good. and I like the health partnership that you have with your husband. That'll keep both of you going full speed ahead for many years so you can enjoy that little Precious that you're cuddling with.

We do exactly the same ! I too put on some weight after 50 ! but I am still not to fat or not to skinny and I feel well. That's the most important thing I think at my age !

Fabulous post!! (And you look fabulous too!) You are SO very right here. The focus needs to be on being as healthy as you can be, and accepting yourself as you are.

Being healthy will allow you to live life more fully, for sure. But life IS for living and if you spend your life at the gym, you'll miss out on a lot. It's a difficult balance. Happy FM to you!

Of course I have to comment since you chose a photo with you and my daughter together. The younger generations of our family sure get better and better. Guess they have good genes.

Janis, I'm one of the lucky ones when it comes to food. I eat what is in front of me. But like most seniors, I want to be around to hug my grandchildren so I started reading labels and eating fresh vegies.

Great picture. You have a beautiful Granddaughter.
