Random Act of Kindness

FUN MONDAY

mommywizdom is our most gracious hostess this week and she said....

Your job this week is to go out and perform a random act of kindness. Now, before you freak out, please read on. This is actually really easy!! This act may be for someone you know or for a perfect stranger. It can be big or small, it's all up to you. Obviously, it should be something within your means. Blog about what you did or maybe about an act of kindness that was bestowed upon you.

I had always heard that to perform a random act of kindness, you should keep it to yourself. keep it between you and God . But I guess as long as the person who received the kindness doesn't know it was you, it will be OK to talk about it. To be nice to someone is the easiest thing to do, just a simple hello or open a door or just a smile. You never know how this simple act of kindness will affect a person. Maybe this person lives by themselves, or has no more living family members to connect with and are lonely. You may be the only person they see at any particular time . A simple hello could brighten their day. One way of doing a Random act of Kindness is to find an "angel tree" pick a person's wish card and make their wish come true. That is what my Hubby and I did just last week. Our Angel tree is located at the health club we belong to. All the people on it are from a local nursing home and rehab center. The one card caught my eye because the name on it said Gerald F. Well, that is my hubby's name too, it was like calling out to us! Gerald wanted some socks, a shirt and a baseball cap. All we had to do was purchase these things , gift wrap them and get it back to the health club, someone from the nursing home would pick the gifts up. It would be nice to witness Gerald opening his gift, but I know in my heart he will be pleased. We try to do the angel tree every year along with a monetary donation to our local homeless shelter. Giving is the greatest "Gift" we can give to ourselves! We are so blessed to be able to help others. Not only at christmas but the whole year through.

I like what you said about keeping it between you and God. Doesn't it make you feel good doing something nice for someone else.

Janis, it's true that keeping a kindness between you and God is the norm. However, I thought we could break the rules this one time. Isn't it wonderful to hear about what others are doing in their "corner of the world?"

Thanks for posting about your kindness. I know Gerald will be thrilled with his gift!

Have a wonderful week!

LOL! Your xmas music scared the life out of me! It came on all of a sudden, really loud! After I nearly fell off my chair and made my hubby laugh his head off, I started laughing too! Thanks that was very kind of you! :-)

I agree with you that the RAK should be kept between you and God. But, (you knew there would be a but didn't you?) I think there are some wonderful ideas out there amongst these FM posts, and maybe someone that doesn't do them naturally like a lot of us, maybe they will learn to do them too. This could be a huge RAK by Momma Wizdom and she didn't even realize it. :)

We have done the angel tree in the past, but this year, we chose to help out in another way. I think that is a very nice idea/RAK. Miss you much!!

We are giving to a family through the school. Ladybug picked two infant twins who are in need of basic supplies. I think we will throw in some infant toys too! Fun, fun, fun!

Janis, I think it's OK to tell folks if you are directly asked about it ;-) Bravo to you and your hubby, and what a neat story! I couldn't get my act together in time for this week's FM either. (I do have an idea, but I figure it's too late by now.)

I know that telling a kindness isn't necessary, but it has been fun reading everyone's RAK. I loved yours. I'm sure Gerald will apprecite his gift very much.

Excellent choice. I have never seen an angel tree for the elderly, only children. I love that idea.

I agree, when someone asks, it is okay to share. And who knows who may see all these great ideas and realize that there are RAKs that don't take a lot of time or money but deeply touch someone else's life.

I think an Angel tree for seniors is a great idea. We so often forget our elderly.

An Angel tree, now that's a really good idea. I've never heard of that before, time to act on that one I think ...

I never knew what those "angel trees" were. Now that I know, I will keep my eye out for one. Thanks!

I love angel trees also. I do agree with you on the annonimity factor on acts of kindness, it makes them more special.

I agree with your thoughts on reaching out to people , just trying to connect with simple kindness. One powerful thing that I always try to remember to do is to look the sales person in the eye when I'm checking out and paying for my purchases. Just remember that there's a live person behind the counter who would appreciate someone just reaching out. Just today had anice conversation with a cashier at Wal-mart who was excited about starting college on February 9.

Like the twist on the angel tree concept. So many elderly are just warehoused in nursing homes and senior facilities and are just starved for some attention. Well done!
